Charlie,

I think that 1/16” clearance is fine. You really do not want the fence touching the outfeed table. I looked at the online manual for your jointer here. If you look at Figure 45 on page 30, you can see the gap.

You certainly do not want to be face jointing anything that thin without some type of jig to hold the piece. The minimum recommended thickness for your jointer is 1/2”.
