depends on what kind of profile you put on the front itself would definitely go 3/4 at least deep profile would give good shadow lines if you like them or thinner lumber with lite profiles do a test pc and see the look if it then use it, try different profiles and a different thickness and get the look you want trial and error is the way to go sure anything you build by hand yourself you will be proud of set up the tablesaw or handplane and start removing wood even a small panel raising bit will put a great profile on the front have fun is the main key
