CL add, I thought I just scored a Gold Mine :)

Read the CL add first please: http://sanantonio.craigslist.org/tls/3865637161.html

So I read this add this morning. Maybe I am just too naive but I seemed to mis read the add and thought I was getting ready to score a whole shop's worth of 2 year old Grizzly equipment for 2,500.00. I was thinking that I am grabbing 2,500.00 cash and I am on my way to grab myself some nice birthday gifts. I was most interested in the 21 spindle line boring, the 5 hp shaper and the 20" planer, but would happily by everything for what I thought was the asking price.

So I get the fella on the phone certainly feeling someone else has beaten me to this deal. Surprise, the equipment is still available. Wow so I am just getting more and more excited by the second. Then the fella tells me he is asking 2,500.00 for just the 5 hp shaper. He wants like 2,300.00 for the line borning, on and on, most of his prices over 2,000.00 for each piece of equipment. Now I am not saying the prices are too high, but they might be, not sure. But many of you might know me some by now and should know that since I have approximately 3,000 invested in 4 shapers, it is doubtful I would be willing to give almost 3,000 for one shaper. In fact, I really could not justify that cost against our budget.

Look at the listing and reply and let me know if it is clear in the add that this guy wants to sell machines separate, or does it appear he is listing all of his machines at the 2,500.00 price. Hind sight is 20/20 as they say and now I can see the add clearer.

It's definitely ambiguous, but I got the sense that just the shaper was 2500 and that the other tools were gonna cost more because of the phrase "also have…." He should have made the title of the ad just the shaper. Plus, I looked at the add before I read your post.

Yeah, I see his wording "also have…" and agree he is intending machines to be listed separate, I was just thrown at first by the title. Gosh, my big smile sort of gulped when he let me know that cost was just for the shaper. Oh well, we should be able to laugh at ourselves from time to time :)

Marcus, I might agree except since I have been acquiring equipment I have pulled deals one would be very naive to think even possible. I paid 160.00 for a Delta cyclone DC with 5hp Leeson, paid 75.00 for a 20" PM bandsaw, 95.00 for a 4X132 Ritter Edge sander, 300 for a 3hp Grizzly TS, 400 for a 3hp Unisaw, 320 for a 12" Woodmaster (sells for 2,000.00 brand new, seller thought it goes for 1,000.00 new), 3,000.00 for 10,000.00 worth of shapers/feeders, 800 for a 4,000.00 FF table, 150.00 for a Safety Speed Panel Router in like new condition (sells new for 3,600.00)...

I have ran into closing commercial shops, one shop closed because the father son deal fell through. I have seen those that were certainly desperate and on hard times. I have seen some who did not know what they had because it was inherited. I once paid 30.00 for a drill press that had a 400.00 Blum attachment on it. The seller had no idea what the attachment was so he sold a 500.00 set up for 30.00 because he needed $$$$$.

I will say that if the fella was to list out his equipment with prices and make one listing per item or make one listing labelled "Wood Shop Closing Sale" and then in that listing go ahead and itemize with model # and price it would help out a ton.

Also, just recently I seen a CL add for a newer model 3 hp Unisaw with a 52" Beis fence and the fella was asking 650.00 OBO. Last night I found this nice shiny Powermatic Cabinet Saw http://www.govdeals.com/index.cfm?fa=Main.Item&itemid=110&acctid=4065 , current bid is at 348.00

So I do disagree that great deals are naive. I no longer believe there are "once in a lifetime" deals when it comes to woodworking machinery as they are always just right around the corner, even if it means some of us might have to travel a little for the deals.

I did look up the sellers 5 hp shaper and for 2,900.00 I can have that shaper brand new, so once I get to the 2,500.00 why would I not want to just pay the extra 400.00 for brand new and peace of mind.

Im not saying great deals don't happen. I've scored a few myself. When I look at that ad, the first thing I thought was that the price was for one piece of equipment…its pretty common to be listed that way on craigslist. Is it worth an email/phone call to be sure it's not a great deal, yes. But if you're first thought is that this is the deal of the century, I would say that is naive like you suggested. I would say the same thing about thinking that powermatic saw will sell for $348, but only time will tell with that (that time being 9 hours).

Im not sure why someone would pay $2500 for the shaper, thats between the seller and whoever buys it. Maybe its worth it for the buyer to inspect the equipment and use it before buying, and also have it the same day. Maybe if you shot him an offer of $1800, he would take it, who knows.

Yeah, considering all of the equipment is only 2 years old I am feeling naive. I do think the deals I have discovered has programmed or trained my brain into believing excellent deals come around from time to time so my mind was going crazy with excitement. Probably did not help that I read the listing while in a drive through with millions of other things running through my mind.
