I don't have any experience with those machines in particular, but just some general knowledge will help. Listen for any bogging down in either machine when taking a relatively heavy cut. Check for alignment, including coplanarity on the jointer-this means bring a straight edge and feeler gauges if you want to split hairs. Check for wear on the knives and the consequential board surfaces; make sure you know how much new blades cost, as that may factor into your final price. If they're dull, see if the owner knows how to change them. The one item-specific piece i can offer is based on other topics here on LJ's. Some people have reported black marks coming from the rollers, which is sometimes caused by issues with board feeding. Some more details can be found here. Good luck, and to me these would be a pretty good deal; many people have had success with a well-tuned Ridgid jointer, and most reviews I see for DeWalt planers are positive.
Thats defiantly a good deal on the jointer. Even with some rust it should clean up pretty well. The planer is an ok deal IMO. Its old and has a 2 knife cutter head vs. the newer 3 knife cutter heads.
The jointer seems like a good deal. the planer on the other hand I would pass. It is a ten year old lunch box plane. the machine either hasn't been used or most of the life is gone. I hate LB planers, due to the noise. Also if you need a motor it will probably cost more than the machine is worth. I would look for a planer that is 220 and no less than 3Hp. It amazes me the number of people that spend $500 for a planer then drop another $500 for a Byrd head on a 12" LB. That is just my opinion, do what you will, and keep makin dust. It took some searching but I was able to get a 20" planer for $675 on CL. It will last me the rest of my life.
I missed out on both. The listing had been up for about 8 hours once I found it….
Darn!
