Sounds like you challenged yourself to be resourceful using those cutoffs rather than starring at them any longer. It is so much easier to grab for the new stock, but with little imagination one can build some impressive things. As far as laminating for a specific thickness, I have just used plain pine or plywood with the hardwood to achieve my goal for finishing a project to keep the cost down. I would resaw say 3/4’’ purpleheart in 1/2 or 1/4’s then back it with the filler. Of course I only did this where it couldn’t be seen so not to ruin the project. Good luck.
