I picked this up last weekend at a local lumberyard. The plan is for it to be turned into multiple drawer fronts for a small tool cabinet. Or possibly a box. I am leaning towards the drawer front route though. The images came out redder than they seem to be to me in person. I took them in natural light. Hard stuff.

Thanks for the help.

It is ring porous. You can see the pattern of the wavy bands in the latewood very distinctly. Looks like little squiggles. This makes it an elm or hackberry. The color would indicate elm because hackberry has a nice cream color. If you look at the end grain after you make a slice with a razor blade, you should see the wavy bands in the latewood very easily.

No distinct odor. I have a good amount of cherry and walnut and it is not that. It is pretty hard. Harder than my maple, cherry and walnut stash but not as hard as my Brazilian cherry or Brush box (now that's some dense stuff). I work with cast iron a good bit also, I do metal casting on a regular basis, its not that tough.

I am leaning towards Elm.

Thanks! Will posts up the project once I get to it. I have some other items to finish first.
