The difference between your chisel and a fine chisel is less than you think. Flatten the back and grind till the nicks are gone then get it sharp (method of your choice) till it easily shaves the hair off your arm. You can then do some serious work with it. Caution: do not grind it till it gets blue or worse red hot. Keep quenching it in water to keep the blade cool. You do not want to remove the temper from the steel.
