Maple will take a stain, but it can be blotchy. Some use shellac to avoid this. There is also an anti blotching compound made by a member here at LJ. I’ve had a brainfart but I’m sure someone will insert the name shortly, or I’ll go to my shop and read the can.

It came to me, Charles Neill. I imagine you can just Google him, or use the LJ search engine.
