I have had many routers in my life time but since they were never a big part of the type of construction I did I never bought a very high end one. I think before this week my nicest router was a 2 horse pwr Craftsman I bought refurbished.
We were robbed blind 2 years ago and I am trying to replace my tools. I have been reading reviews hear and other places and had decided that I would go all out and spend $190 at Amazon for the Bosch 1617 router combo. I had it in my cart to buy but really did not have the funds right now. So I decided for the 100th time to check CL. I found an old man who had decided to quit wood working for ceramics and was selling his entire wood shop. 1 1/2 hr drive later and I am snooping through years of tool collecting. I finally come to a Porter-Cable Combo Pack router case. I thought it was the Porter-Cable 693LRPK so a close match to the Bosch I was going to buy. Hardly used we settled on $150. I felt that no warranty, Manual, and 1/4" Collet made the price fair to both since I really wanted to not just low ball the older carpenter…..Next day I felt horrible! It is not the Porter-Cable 693LRPK, it is the Porter-Cable 895PK.
While excited to own such a fine, powerful machine, I feel bad for the older man. I decided that even though I really cannot afford anymore the fair thing would to be to call him and explain the price I offered was based on a lower priced router, if he wants I will return it or if he finds the 1/4" Collet and Manual I would scrape up another $25-$30
He seemed aright with the latter and I truly hope he is. I am not sure which makes me feel worse, Way underpaying the older carpenter? or Being so excited to have this router I never imagined I could ever have?
