Scott, I have both a planer and a jointer but when I need to joint something wider than 6”, I use the planer and “sled”. The sleds I see articles for seem WAY overcomplicated to me. I use a wide,flat board and a variety of wedges brad nailed to the sled board to keep the wokpiece from rocking. Screw a strip behind the workpiece (below the blades!) and you’re good to go.
