I think that’s more a question of what kind of turning do you do? If you like to do bowls and platters and such, you’ll benefit from more swing over the ways or outboard turning capacity. Both Jets have swiveling and sliding headstocks, so you can turn outboard off the ways. The 1442 only has a 1 HP motor, though. Have you looked at the Nova 1624-44? No variable speed, but the belt changes are said to be easy, and it has more HP and a lower min speed.
