It’s a beautiful machine to be sure. That sort of transmission
is usually seen on metal lathes. I suppose it could be a metal
spinning lathe. It should work well for turning wood.

You’ll want to assess the mounting system for spur centers
(usually morse taper) and the threads pitch and size of
the headstock spindle. Some old lathes have odd
arrangements in these areas.
