I am new to this site and am looking for some help. I generally only work with reclaimed wood. I recently recieved what I initially thought was going to be some oak from a buddy, however after planing it down discovered it is not. I have a hunch as to what it is, however do not want to say as it may sway opinions. The wood it quite light and is as hard as oak. Here is a picture of it wood after it was planed and joined as a table top. Any help you all could give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

I would say maple or birch, too. Definitely a diffuse porous hardwood because the grain is subdued. The spalted board is maple. Maple spalts really well.

pretty sure it's not alder, alder tends to be fairly uniform in it's color, which when worked is typically pinkish. The reason I suggest birch or cherry is the pinkish hughes in the wood, not really all that comon in most species of maple. however the camera that took that picture really didn't have the proper lighting in order to see the subtleties of the wood color.

Cherry.
I am also suggesting that the two different pics depicting the species are not the same.
The first "tabletop" pic is clearly a different species or cut…if that is possible, of the other.
I say the first pic IS Cherry…the second, a long neighbor of it…maybe, but pink also, and Cherry too, not a desirable cut, but all the same, Cherry

Initially I was thinking maybe heart pine, but don't have much experience outside oak and the more traditional hardwoods. After looking at all the comments and comparing I am leaning towards maple. The grain patters and hardness among the other pieces match well. I appreciate all the help guys. It's been driving me crazy. This is the down side to working with reclaimed….figuring out what it is.
