It's wierd!

I've been attempting to improve the rating of a website http://www.thetypewriterman.co.uk that I've set up for a friend who is trying to recreate his old career after suffering from being made redundant several times.

During the course of comparing results for other websites I manage (unpaid) for other groups, using Google Webmaster Tools, I was surprised to see how often lumberjocks.com appeared in the list of sites that linked to 'my' sites.

What further surprised me was that my own site http://www.donjohnson24.co.uk (which appears on my LJ Home page) does NOT have ANY links to it at all, but my village hall website for example (that may have been briefly mentioned in a topic 'Show us your website' lumberjocks.com/replies/on/1924853) DOES have a link from LJ. How strange!

It would seem that being mentioned on LJ is good for a site's Google ranking, but that perhaps NOT if it is in one's profile !

If anyone can throw light on the machinations of Google in this area, I would be very interested.

Uh!

Are you jesting with me, young Roger ?

The only things I remember seeing in shop windows in Amsterdam were 'Ladies of the Night' advertising their wares - usually sitting on red plush chairs!

Please explain.

Didn't you appear in a Batman movie ?

We had some snow in the UK - not the amounts that you get over the pond - but the country still ground to a halt for a few days. Schools closed, cars slid into rivers, villages were cut off - just the usual stuff.

Because it happens infrequently, and for such a short time, we really have no snow-coping culture - unless you count the gritter lorries that spread a salty mixture on major roads. Apart from the people that drive to the European ski resorts, no one has snow chains, and the four-wheel drive vehicles are only normally used to take kids to school not for coping with slippery conditions.

Here in our little corner of Somerset we seem to miss most of the nasty stuff, whether snow or flooding which has affected areas all around us - snow in the Quantocks and Exmoor, or flooding on other areas of The Somerset Levels. In the latter case, we live in Chedzoy, which along with other villages like Middlezoy and Westonzoyland are all apparently on raised areas - Zoys - of The Levels, so we (hopefully) keep our feet fairly dry!

I'm still happy to be here rather than to have to experience the extremes of weather that we see reported from the US!

Going back to the original question, I'm rather embarrassed to say that when I used links:www.donjohnson24.co.uk I got 20,900 links !!!

It appears that Webmaster Tools sometimes gets stuck on old data (perhaps in this instance as previously I had index.shtml whereas I now have index.html) and stubbornly refuses to collect new info', and the advice I found was to 'Foget aboudit!'

So I shall, and I apologise to anyone who wasted time reading my original query. (but not you Roger !)
