The G1021 is a heavy duty stationary planer vs a portable. You get cast iron, a large induction motor, more capacity, more mass, heavier duty construction all around, and essentially a lifetime of service with minor upkeep. I view portables as being less permanent, and less feasible to maintain long term, though they can last a good long while. The finish you get will depend a lot on the condition of the knives and setup. There’s no question that the G1021 is a heavier duty planer that’ll handle more work more easily….whether or not it’s worth replacing your 735 with is up to you. I’d be mighty tempted. You could always buy it, try it, and make an informed decision based on which one your prefer.
