There used to be some videos on the net of Maloof making a chair while giving a lecture on woodworking, but they appear to be gone now. I suspect they were from a DVD of some sort, you might be able to find those.

However, from what I remember, I think he used a bandsaw in a way that he’s famously said “this is dangerous, don’t do it” (free-handling an angled cut), and a rasp.

When I need to shape a lot of work, I use a sanding disk on an angle grinder; with some practice you can do some pretty sharp and detailed curves.
