I think with certain stearated paper and certain finishes you can have a problem. I think this happened to me once with a waterborne finish, Target Coating PSL ( the name has been changed a few times) and Klingspor paper. But I’ve used a lot of stearated paper on other stuff and never saw the same effect. The problem I had was adhesion, and only in certain spots. The finish came off in a very sharp edged spangled looking spot (several spots, actually). OTOH, I may have mis diagnosed the whole thing. But polyurethane resins do inhibit adhesion (that’s why you sand between coats) so I suspect there is a possibly….maybe just a remote one.
