For box joints, stopped dadoes work best. I use doug stowe’s method of setting up stops at the router table and running the pieces through. Properly done, you only need stopped dadoes on two of the pieces. The other two can be through dadoes.

I splurged a bit on the box joint jig and grabbed the incra ibox. Super easy and fun to set up and use.
