This is fun to think about.

If you started with a piece of round stock you could establish the two square ends and then scribe some lines (vague enough?) from one facet to the other that’s 90o off. I would then see it as hand work.

I would guess this is done on a CNC machine, but it would still be possible and fun to do by hand on a smaller scale. Much smaller.
