Those under mount guides are quite popular, they go in %80 of our cabinetry. Often it is the client forcing them to be used, even on beautiful pieces of wood. I have repaired enough antique pieces, I can see the point on that walnut. One of my favorites is the sheen of 200+ year old mahogany runners, that have been waxed and run so many times. Can’t beat that finish.
