Many people will tell you to buy a scale to weight your bowl blanks weekly until they stop losing weight before final turning. Idea here is when wood stops losing weight it is at EMC therefore ready to turn. (see below) That works great but advise buying an inexpensive moisture meter like this one. Bought this meter couple years back when Lowes sold them for $10.00 and seems to work great.

With a moisture meter you know MC before start turning, after rough turning, and before final turning. Without going into great detail want wood plus or minus 1 or 2 percent in use EMC (equilibrium moisture content). EMC will differ for indoor or outdoor use.
