Russell , do 2 prestain , I use 1 part General Finishes cinnamon dye , to 1 part light brown (GF) and 1 part water , season to taste, meaning add more cinnamon for more red, and brown, for brown,
I have a nice 3 board cherry table I made about 5 years ago,(no dye) I added a 1/2 part more of the cinnamon, and it matches perfectly, and the color is even. As the cherry ages it will mellow and take over past the dye, that said, the natural look is not lost, its just evened out. My clients dont seem to like mismatched pieces. Additionally if they buy other pieces, using this formula, they match, I like that and so do they. the above formula is for a natural cherry color *
