I would suggest that the finish is not likely to be shellac due to the fact it was in a bar, and shellac is dissolved by alcohol. I wouldn’t use shellac in my bar, unless top coated with something else; which is entirely possible..

Also, if it was shellac alone, the rings would have gone away by themselves because water can evaporate through shellac.

Therefore, the oil/heat treatment seems reasonable.
