Quartz is just the material; it’s crushed rock instead of aluminum oxide or whatever.

PS: I did a little more looking and found this “Flint (or flintstone) is a hard, sedimentary cryptocrystalline form of the mineral quartz.” Flint paper I’ve heard of; I think I have some ancient 36 grit stuff out in a drawer somewhere in the garage.
