Close call today with lathe

Today I was turning a 12" walnut burl bowl on my lathe and while I was working to hollow out the center it exploded. A large chunk got me on the arm and I thought it was broke for a few seconds. I still have only found 1/4 of the bowl and it had paint on it from the ceiling.

I was using my 12-20 Jet lathe and I don't know what the RPM was but I now think it might have been to high.

I've found that it's good to take a little bit at a time and let it sit for a day between. The internal stresses can be released rather suddenly if you do it in one sitting. This also gives the outside a chance to dry a little at a time reducing the risk of a crack.

Glad you're OK!

Sounds like that would get you shaking for awhile… and a little "gun shy"...
