Guys, I have to drill some wooden knobs out that have a 1/8 hole out to make it 5/8 how would you hold them so I can use the drillpress and not damage the exterior of the knob? This is almost the exact knob I'm working with. Thanks
I wrap a small towel around them and stick them in a wooden vise, use the hand drill with a stop on it…. But since I have a lathe I would put them in the NOVA Soft Jaws and do it that way…....
I'd do it the same way, but add a set of V blocks to hold it in the vise. i would probably use a battery drill with a very light touch on a slow speed.
Shop towel, hold with a pair of visegrips, clamp in place on the drill press.
Shop towel, hold with a wood "handscrew" type clamp, clamp to the table with a second one.
Vise jaws of wood, or just some cloth. Clamp knob in vise with the center point of the hole 5/16" above the top of the vise's jaws. Use the vise's jaws as a steady rest for the handdrilling. Tape as a depth stop wrapped around the bit.
Well after looking around a little while here's what I came up with. I took a piece of 2×4 and drilled a shallow recess for the knob to sit in, then a square of 1/2" plywood with a hole slightly larger then the base and screwed the plywood to the 2×4 sandwiching the knob in the middle. Used my metal vise to hold the 2×4 leveled with a a bubble level in the center. Then used my drill press to make the hole. Worked great!!
