You can determine the dimension either with a dimension tool or by using the tape measure. The dimension tool will put a dimension in the model the tape measure just displays the dimension in the status bar at the bottom.
Another caution is that either way you do this (dimension tool or tape measure) you must make sure you are “on axis” or you will not get accurate information. You will know if you are on axis because the dotted line between the points you pick will be red, blue or green.
Also, when adding dimensions (for example dimensioning the height of a table from the bottom of a leg to the table top) if the two points you pick on the model are not directly above/below each other you will not get accurate dimensions. So, in my example if the table top extends out over the leg you will have to first use the tape measure to create a point to dimension to.
