The first coat of finish is a sealer. However, a sealcoat of dewaxed shellac is faster. That’s what I would do.

Padauk is an oily wood. It also isn’t very color fast. Shellac is great for both aspects. Oil based finishes have a hard time curing when the wood is oily.
