Of course if NOBODY on any site EVER clicked through to the advertised sights, they would give up!

I doubt that, since they obviously don’t have anything better to do. But that aside, there’s more to it than getting traffic directly. There is also the matter of search engine optimization (SEO). The more inbound links they have scattered around the web, the better their site looks to search engines. And deep linking is the best – ie, links not to their home page but rather, links to TheirWebsite/Articles/Topic/LameContent.html

The smart ones (for lack of a better term) place links in their signature so they can go through and change them occasionally.
