I wonder sometimes about thes #'s for example:

http://lumberjocks.com/projects/71820

in excess of 40K views in 8 hrs where nothing around it is anywhere near, are there that many yisitors to this site in 8hrs.

40K and 3 comments, it seems so out of place.

HorizontalMike said… FWIW, when signed in you are not counted in the ongoing count tick.

I thought that was the case too - perhaps it used to be.
But I've just tested on a very very old project and, even though I'm signed in, every "refresh" on the project page did bump the view count.

Nice to see the site admins chirping in here, as usual.

Whatever's going on, it's made the whole "Daily Top Three" thing completely meaningless and very misleading.
I think this project is cool, but it's got the badge by virtue of the 5355 views (it has but 1 fave and 2 comments). And this is a cool bench, but, again, it's the views that got it the badge (1 fave and 4 comments).
Posted between these 2 projects, was this piece, with 5 faves and 18 comments, but only 308 views, so it didn't make it, yet clearly the LJ population think a lot more highly of it than of the other 2.

What's going on?
Presumably there are site access logs showing what's happening?
Yet silence…

I agree … the "Daily Top Three" is pretty much meaningless (I've never been quite sure what the intention of it is … I don't view woodworking as a competitive thing).

I had two recent projects that showed astronomical numbers of views that were clearly artificially inflated.

Nobody died, nobody's taxes went up, so it isn't a big deal … just makes the site look silly.

Open and wondering/wandering thoughts…

Just how does say "Chisel Handles" compete with a "Walnut Highboy Chest"? Surely they wouldn't/shouldn't be in the same category for Daily Top 3 honors, are they? Oops, now I've mentioned categories… ARE there categories? And should we know/understand them? How many? What are they? Why those?... and… and.. ad nauseum…

FWIW, in a way we already have a pseudo "Top" competition, if you will, and that is the "most discussed" tag.
