I’ve seen the vertical chess boards all over the place. As far as I’m concerned, it’s only an outright forgery if you stamp someone else’s name on it when you’re done. Look at how popular the classic Staunton style chess pieces are, for example. They’re the most recognized template in the world, and making your own in that style is hardly frowned upon.
