Couldn't resist posting this link. Subject is a cardboard bicycle that support a rider weighing 220kg or 485 lbs. and which only costs about $16 to produce. Of course it's not just about bicycles as the technology could be used to cheaply produce so many useful things.
A few years ago I read an article about a Japanese architect that built a small span bridge from corrugated cardboard over a small stream and it included a picture of a car parked in the center of the bridge.
I have also seen pallets constructed of corrugated cardboard.
An interesting idea. I was hoping to get a view of the gearing but none of the video showed the right side of the bike. Are the gears made of cardboard also? Certainly is out of the box….or should I say OF the box thinking
I'm thinking bandsaws, table saws, furniture, you name it. Lightweight and easy to move around, but vibrations might be an issue and the question of recycling. How about airplanes, cars, etc? I guess I am getting carried away, but lightweight strong and cheap materials do introduce an amazing range of possibilities.
It's great to see something innovative like that that could make a real difference to someone in the third world.
I sincerely hope someone gets behind this guy to start production instead of just buying him off and burying the potential.
