Old vs New Jointer

After a few years of some basic woodworking, I am slowly working to replace my collection of Ryobi tools with some higher quality items. I just upgraded my router to the Milwaukee 5625 so I am in the process of starting to save up for the next purchase. While looking on CL, I came across a Delta 37-220 Jointer that appears to be in great shape, has a new set of knives installed and a set of old ones. The price should be around $250 and everything appears (based on pictures) to be in great shape.

Although I wasn't really looking to buy a jointer right now, I really need to replace my poor Ryobi BTS10S table saw, it made me start to think about whether some of the older equipment might be a better choice in some cases. The 37-220 does not have a lot of the convenience of newer models (no jack screws or dust ports for example) but it seems a lot of people are still on the look out for these older machines (not necessarily this model).

So I guess my questions are, is the 37-220 a good value at $250 vs newer jointers in the less than $500 range and what other types of tools might it be appropriate to look at older models (perhaps drill press).

Thanks

I had one for a long, long time.Rode it hard and put up wet. If its sound and all there 250 would be a fair deal. I dont know of a new 6 inch jointer that would come close to that, especially considering what you would pay for new. (New and chinese or similar) JB

I just sold a 37-220 on CL yesterday for $200. It had a spare set of knives and a 1 HP Baldor motor. It was a solid machine (I installed a 4" dust port under the cutter head that worked well). If you're looking for a 6" jointer it's a good performer, and at that price point a good value vs. a newer machine. Good luck.
