I would make the removable panesl as you mentioned but keep the sides flush and then add some rare earth magnets to keep it in place until you slide the panel up . Sliding the removable panel up would offset the magnets and release the panel.

-- If retiring is having the time to be able to do what you enjoy then I have always been retired.
