Sadly I couldn't list this as a "project" because it's not wood, but all metal. Still I hope somebody will find it useful!

As with many of my projects I like to straddle the fence between "hey, that's pretty clever", and "WHAT? ARE YOU INSANE?!!"

This time I'm playing with old utility knife blades! Hurray!

Yeah, I might have nicked my fingers a time or two, but my tutorial got "featured". So check it out:

And, hey, if you like it please drop a vote.
(They have a cool little "go pro" camera up for grabs this time.)

So far they've worked very well. The biggest problem I've had is avoiding the impulse to grab the thing sitting there when I need to cut a piece of rope or something. The force of habit says, "Oh, there's a knife." Grab.
It's a little surprising how conscious you have to be about restraining yourself. Force of habit, I guess.

Yes, they are ground on only the one side only so you have a perfectly flat backside to run along your ruler. That's why I had to cut them back so far - to get past the factory edge on the other side.

I haven't had any problem with the blade bending, but these were name brand stainless blades so they are pretty strong. To be fair though, I really haven't needed push super hard. Regular scoring pressure has been plenty to leave a good deep scratch. Maybe if ran into a chunk of something hard like African mahogany or something that would be a different story?
