It sounds like the Tung oil does give your boxes a richer look, so it is needed in the process. I know what you mean about wanting to finish faster, but after you have so much work in them, you don’t want to have finish problems. You should follow the manufacturer’s recommendations. Maybe there is some other product that can enhance the color that drys quicker!! I once built a bar in my daughter’s house and I had about 8 coats of brushed on poly on the top. I wanted to make it totally free of finishing marks, so I sprayed on the last 4 coats. I had been waiting overnight for the brush on poly so I did the same for the sprayed on stuff. After the second coat of spray on was on there for a few minutes, the whole top wrinkled and I had to strip it. What a mess. Then I read the label and it said to wait 5 days to thoroughly dry before applying the second coat.
