Hi Adam,

A lot of stuff the American LJ’s post is just not going to be applicable to you, here in Ireland.

I see you’re workshop is Lucan way, can you get yourself down to McQuillans in Blanchardstown and have a look at what’s on offer? You could always give them a call first if travelling is difficult. Ask to talk to one of the guys who looks after machinery, and let him know what kind of work you will be doing on it – your choice might be influenced by what sort of drive spindle or plate comes with the machine.
If you are going the internet shopping route, bear in mind that a large chunk of your budget will go on the courier because of the weight of the machine. You’d also have to ask yourself if you are happy to take a chance on something without seeing it first – always a danger when buying stuff off the internet.

Axminster’s machines are all made by reputable manufacturers and given a different paint job, so I wouldn’t rule them out, other places to look are www.raygrahams.co.uk up North who deliver free for orders over £100, or www.joemckenna.ie in Limerick

There’s also Donedeal.ie, you might get lucky there.

Avoid like the plague anything for woodworking made by SIP, quality is terrible. There’s a small Scheppach and there’s a small Jet that are within budget. If you could save up a little bit longer, I would go for a Record CL3.
