Sirfatty- While I agree that those topics don’t belong, I also understand that if the moderators were to begin deciding what “belonged” here and what didn’t we’d open the flood gates. Do threads about our personal lives belong? Are we allowed to mention a metal working tool in one of the “antique tool” threads? Is it ok to post threads about someone’s illness or a hoilday, etc?

I used to run a hardware store in a small town. Guys would come in and shoot the breeze about all sorts of non hardware related stuff while drinking my free coffee. I let them because it got them in the store, and it promoted a community atmosphere. That’s what LJ’s does, and I think it’s a good idea.

I’m not saying everything should be fair game. Things that are obscene or conduct that is offensive to society in general, like extreme personal attacks and those who seek only to cause division in the community, should not be allowed. But those cases are very few and are usually dealt with by the moderators already.
