I would leave them unfinished. Even if you use a “safe” paint, oil, or ??, many parents will pass you by because they would rather be safe than sorry.

I’m dealing with a somewhat similar situation myself. I generate buckets full of scrap pieces of wood in all kinds of shape and size. I have a new grandson, and there are several youngsters in my neighborhood who would like to play with the scraps. I’ve been thinking of dumping a bucket full in a cement mixer and tumbling them to get rid of sharp edges and let the kids have at them.
