Hi everyone - sorry for perhaps a bit of awkwardness, I'm new on this forum.
I have a question: For the world of me I can't find a 3/8 inch collet for a Freud router FT2200 (FT2000 would do too, as they're interchangeable). I got a 1/2 and 1/4 but I'd like to use some bits with 3/8 inch shank - obviously not possible without a right size collet. I found 3/8 collets for Freud in UK, from an outfit called MTMC Tools, but they don't ship to Canada/US.
Someone on the forum (I believe Fred Hargis, if I may quote) stated that a Dewalt 3/8 in collet works in his Freud router. Does anyone know which one is it?
I did exactly what Loren describes with the same exact router. I even bought mine at woodcraft like Bob shows. I even had an EXTRA one I'd give you….but the router and most of the accessories were stolen when my shop was burgled. I can tell you, though, that it worked well. For what it's worth, I loved that router but it had a habit of letting bits creep if seated totally. Good luck!
Bertha is right about bits creeping if seated fully. All routers will do this because they can't get tight if the bit bottoms out. To solve this problem I put a Space ball in the bottom of the router spindle shaft. The little rubber ball will compress and allow you to get the proper tension on the bit.
I really wish I could help you with this. In the photo below you see the Dewalt collet on the left (marked 3/8" and the Freud 1/4" collet on the right (marked in metric). I bought these over 12 years ago from International Tool in Florida,. The collet isn't marked with any part number….nor can I remember what model it fit ( I keep thinking the DW621, but I'm old and suffer from CRS). Maybe someone can tell you from the pic. Really wish I could be more help….
Rob, I did some searching and it looks a lot like this one. I guess you could try one and return it if it's not the same….I'm kinda out of ideas. I should add, I think when I bought mine it was over $30.
Thanx a million, guys (and gals, if there are any) - I'll get a DeWalt collet, and if it doesn't fit I can always return it (I'm pretty careful with tools, so I don't expect to do any damage).
The reducer sleeve would be my second choice, so to speak - I believe a collet hold is much more firm, but short of finding one, a sleeve would turn out to be the only way.
Thanx again
OK, I have a proof in my hand: DeWalt collet P/N DE6275 (3/8 inch). It definitely does work with Freud FT2200 router - just tried it with my own hands an hour ago. It clinches the 3/8" shank beautifully, no slippage, no rattling, no "tool wandering" up or down, no chatter.
I'm told that collets and nuts are the same for Freud FT2000 (I never verified it personally on the physical item, though), so DeWalt DE6275 collet should work with Freud FT2000 as well, but I can't tell for sure. On the other hand, collet DE6275 does work with Freud FT2200 for 100% sure.
Incidentally, this is a collet originally designed for DeWalt DW625E router.
I had forgotten about this thread until just now. I'm glad that worked out for you and I intend to keep that part number on hand. That will also fit the newer Freud 1700 router as well (no longer available).
This is an older thread, you may not receive a response, and could be reviving an old thread. Please consider creating a new thread.
