Earlier today I was chatting with an Amazon rep named Sheetal and I was called "dear" (exact statement was "That's ok dear, we have a copy of the emails that we send you"). I was offended by the use of the term "dear". I feel that it is totally inappropriate for any company representative, regardless of their gender, to call a customer, regardless of the customer's gender, "dear".
I contacted Amazon corporate headquarters and explained my view. I was assured that they would open an investigation, but no apology was offered.
If this had happened to you would you feel disrespected? Sexually harassed? or ???
Should it matter what the genders of the individuals (corporate rep, customer) are?
Anyone have any idea what gender Sheetal is? What nationality it is?
Wouldn't even come close to being an issue for me.
Some people are just friendly,
but thanks to people like you they're getting to be less and less of those people.
"Anyone have any idea what gender Sheetal is? What nationality it is?" Sounds like your looking for support for a non issue and your question calls your motivations into question. Get over it.

no - not in the least
when you fall South of the Mason Dixon line, "Hon" or "Honey" is the norm
for a female to address a total stranger in a relaxed professional setting.
I have noticed that women from Africa, India and some Caribbean countries
often use the tern "Dear" in any kind of setting.
Mr. Tutt, you are wound a little too tight over this - take it with a grain of salt and move on.
After an extensive Internet search I have learned that, Sheetal (Hindi : शीतल) is a Hindu/Sanskrit Indian name. Further research leads me to believe that the word dear is an ancient Sanskrit word, dating to the second millennium BCE, and depending on inflection could mean old curmudgeon.

John, you have triggered me with your use of the honorific title "Mr." when referring to Jesse. How can you assume that Jesse is a gender male or, for that matter, is currently identifying as such? Please, from this point forward, so as not to offend Jesse or any other readers of this thread, learn to use the gender neutral "Mx."
Also, your use of the gender specific terms "female" and "women" is inconsiderate as they both contain within them the gender specific "female" and "women". They should heretofore be substituted with the gender neutral "human".
Wouldn t even come close to being an issue for me.

No, "dear" isn't the least bit offensive to me. What is highly offensive to me is John's 3 picture post above. If I need to explain why, I certainly can.

While you weren't looking we stepped into the Orwellian world as described in "Nineteen Eighty-four". At this point, if there is any hope, it lies with the Proles.
We are the Proles.
