Bandit, I have seen one of those Craftsman planes with grooved sides before and I also wondered why it was made that way. The logical guess is they did it that way for the same reason the soles were grooved. I imagine it would be a lot of work to grind/sand the sides smooth and not only that you would also be removing a lot of material which would reduce the weight and mass of the plane. I would just leave the grooves there if it was mine.
