I just finished a similar project starting with rough 5/4 walnut. I also have a relatively short jointer, but I didn’t use it for the rails. I flattened one face of each rail using a sled for my planer. Then, of course, flattened the other face as usual. The edges were squared up using the table saw. Remember, the rails don’t need to be quite as square and straight as if you were going to edge glue them. In this case, if you are careful, they will be straight enough for the purpose. I don’t like that statement either, but it’s true.
