Firstly, this is a good reminder that some of the simple techniques that seem old and natural to some (I’ve watched my Dad do this since I was a little boy, and I’m quite grown up by now) are new, neat and novel to others. So thanks Dakremer for putting this up. We should all rack our brains for some more just like it.

Second, I worked with a tech teacher last year who uses skewers instead of matches. They are quite a lot tougher so the screw really does hold well. For small holes though, matches fit better.

Lastly, I’ve never seem my Dad do this with a pencil, scissors or glue. Just push it in, snap it off, repeat if there is still room in the hole, and screw away. Even without the precision and the glue, it still works fine ;-)
