Here I go again – probably sliding off the edge of the subject, but -

I can’t use a brush to cover larger areas with glue, when I’m veneering.
Instead I’ve had good luck with a glue bottle that has a rubber roller head.
The roller spreads the glue pretty fast and I only need to squeeze the bottle to
dispense additional glue. If the glue starts to dry up, on the roller, adding
more glue will keep it moist and spreading or the roller can easily
be wiped off with a paper towel or dampened rag. It helps that I use
TB Cold Press Veneer Glue that has a 15 minute open time more like
TB Extended or TB III. I think TBII dries too quickly.

If you would like to experiment, you’re welcome to try my roller bottle and the glue that I use.
