This isn’t the best plane for fine woodworking. A shoulder plane will really help you more, but like you said, they are a bit more expensive. That said, I’m not sure you’ll really be satisfied with this one. If you take the $50 and put it towards an $80 or $90 used Stanley shoulder plane, I think you’ll be much happier.
