I have absolutely no experience with a self contained unit, i have squirted some stuff with a cup gun, and well i liked that, but the option to have a self contained unit is interesting.

SO any insite, to Rocklers unit or one of their unit, they appear to have an entry level unit for under a couple hundred,
Now keep in mind this would be an occassional use unit, probably more for clear finishes versus anything else, maybe a little squirting of stain.

thoughts please, as time allows

I own a unit that is the same, but sold by Harbor Freight. I actually bought extra cups for the unit through Rockler. I've used it for staining a few fences and decks.

For what you're going to use it for….stains and the occasional finish, I think it would do OK. As long as you temper your expectations. A 4-stage turbine pro unit, it ain't. LOL

Seriously, this unit is made for thinner materials, mainly oil-based finishes and stains, or water-based stains. I wouldn't attempt to do paint or water-based finishes with it, they're too thick.

Make sure to buy extra cups with the unit, for easier cleanup.

I bought the Rockler HVLP spray outfit a few years ago and not being very experienced with anything other than the rattle can, it was a learning curve … But I did learn … I have used this thing for Shellac, WBPolly, and some danish oils. The oils are just to time consuming to clean up and I chalk that up to "OK, I tried it".

I have liked the unit so well that I upgraded it an Earlix and love it … If you would like to have the Rockler unit to learn as I did, I would be happy to give it to you as it is only collecting dust right now, ... It works just fine, like I said I upgraded … PM me if your interested. FREE is my favorite 'F' word.

I am in the same boat as Mike. My first HVLP was the single stage Summit HVLP sprayer, all plastic. Only used it to spray poly and it did it's job. Have since acquired a 4 stage HVLP. However, might keep the $100 Summit one around just for thin material.
