I was going to say cherry. But cherry turns darker with age and exposure to light. How long ago was middle school? :)

OK – the answer is in Chris’ bio. ‘84-86. So that’s 27 years. So I change my vote. Too light to be cherry. Grain is too coarse to be poplar. So, assuming it’s something common and available birch is a good guess.
