You’re looking for “face cuts” or “first cuts” from a mill. Keep in mind that these may be the worst face of the log. If a sawyer is cutting for grade, he finds the BEST face and then makes his first cut OPPOSITE that best face, to get a flat side for the log to sit on while he then starts cutting the best face of the log.
