what about a hinge on the table top so that it folds up. have it go past 90 degrees so that it doesn’t want to fall back down. you could then have a small shelf on the underside of the top. have it angled a little bit so that as the top is up, the shelf is level. this would give you a shelf for the coffee that is higher than the regular top that you (or your wife) could reach when your bed is in it’s raised position.
